Next, carefully pry the battery from its socket by lifting it up on the side that is closest to the key-ring loop. Make sure you wear rubber gloves to protect the clips or electronic contact surfaces.

Place the new battery in the socket after the previous one has been removed. Ensure that the positive side of the battery is facing up, and that all clips are secured. Slide the cover towards the key-ring area until it becomes loose and slides off. Then, you can remove the cover and reveal the key blade inside. It can be used to unlock your vehicle by the driver's side doors when the battery of your key fob is dead or missing.

How to Start Your Vehicle

Modern vehicles are equipped with keyfobs that can do more than just unlock and lock the doors. They also have handy functions like summoning and auto-parking the vehicle. First, find an area of clean work surface on which you can lay out all the essential items needed for this project. Then lay the fob on the work surface, with its Volvo logo facing upward. Utilize a flathead, coin, or any other similar tool to open the battery hatch. Be careful not to touch the electronic contact surfaces of the fob with your tools, as this may cause the fob's key to stop functioning properly.

After the hatch has been opened, slide the battery into its socket. Make sure that the positive (+ side) is facing upwards. After the clips are locked into place Replace the battery cover and then reassemble your fob.

By pressing the unlock button once, the alarm will be disconnected and the driver's door will be unlocked. By pressing it a second it will unlock all the doors and tailgate. The unlock button can also be used to open the windows during hot days or to let in fresh air before stepping out on the road. If you'd like to go further, the keyfob can be used to turn on the ERS which will start the climate control system of the vehicle and allow it to warm or cool the vehicle according to the desired temperature settings when the vehicle is parked.

How do I replace the battery?

If your key fob isn't locking or unlocking your vehicle like it used to it could be time to change the battery. The battery can be changed by using a flathead screwdriver pry bar made of plastic, or other small tools. First look for the small slot where the backup/emergency metal ignition key used to be. Place the blade of your screwdriver or pry bar tool into this slot and gently pry open the rear of the fob that holds the key. Once the fob has been opened you can locate the CR2032 3V battery and take it off. Replace the battery, then snap together the fob.



Note: Some older Volvos use a different battery that is called the CR2025. CR2025 batteries have an average thickness of 7 tenths a millimeter less than a CR2032 which means you'll need to be extra careful when replacing your battery.
